		<description><![CDATA[New website ready to use.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The BioWALK4Biofuels project website www.biowalk4biofuels.eu went online on 29th July 2010. <strong>NGVA Europe</strong>, the European association for bio/natural gas vehicles, is one of the project partners and was responsible for developing this new website (see all partners here).</p>
<p>BioWALK4Biofuels, with full title “Biowaste and Algae Knowledge for the Production of 2nd Generation Biofuels” is a new EU-funded project under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), which aims to develop an innovative system for the treatment of biowaste and use of GHG emissions to produce biofuels, where macroalgae is used as a catalyser. Landfilling of biowaste is one of the major sources of methane emissions in Europe, but the treatment of biowaste still requires a strong support from EU legislation. Therefore the project addresses difficulties in the direct utilisation of biowaste, cost-efficiency and pollution in its output products. This scenario shows the necessity to innovate in the production of cleaner renewable fuels, where e.g. algae is used as biomass to produce biomethane as a vehicle fuel, a great and fascinating way to make European transport greener.<br />
Throughout the project NGVA Europe is responsible for the dissemination of project results by using its vast NGV network, as well as to organise various international events and seminars. Together with its partners, NGVA Europe will also carry out a comparative analysis of the main European legislative tools on biomethane, in order to tackle economic and legislative barriers being identified during the project.</p>

This is only the beginning and our new website, which will be improved continuously and remains the main source of information on biomethane produced from algae and its various applications in transport and energy.<br />
More background Information</p>
<p>The world energy demand is expected to rise 60% by 2030; oil consumption has increased by 20% since 1994, while the European Union import dependency has reached almost 54% of its energy requirements in 2006. Land filling of biowaste is one of the major sources of methane emissions in Europe, contributing to 2% of GHG emissions in 2007 in the European Union (EU). Biodegradable waste that is land filled should be reduced to 35% of 1995 levels by 2016 according to the EC Landfill Directive (1999/31/EC). Direct and indirect green-house gas emissions (GHG) from industries are currently at about 12 GtCO2-eq. The Council Directive 91/676/EEC, has underlined the need to control the reduction of water pollution caused by nitrates from wastes to protect human health, living resources and aquatic ecosystems. Additionally attention is being focused on the treatment of biowaste, which requires strong support from EU legislation to address difficulties in their direct utilisation, cost-efficiency and its output product pollution.<br />
